TRUSU clubs as a way to make friends in a new place!

So, it’s been a while since you arrived in Kamloops. You lucked out with your roommates in your housing. They’re not noisy, they keep the place clean — but there’s a problem: you have nothing to talk about, and it feels like you’re from different worlds. Same problem with your classmates, and you don’t have any relatives or friends in the city—an unpleasant situation, to say the least.

Luckily, TRU has clubs — a great way to find like-minded people and make friends. In this article, I’ll explain what they are and how to join them.

TRU students are a large and diverse group of people, so you’ll most likely be able to find a club that suits you. To do this, just follow this link: https://trusu.ca/clubs/.

There are clubs for almost any topic — from political groups like the TRUSU NDP Club to hobby groups like the TRUSU Gaming Club.

Your eyes are probably darting around, right? If so, I’ll tell you a little bit about the club I personally attend.

“TRUSU Smash and FGC” may sound like a random set of letters to someone unfamiliar with it, but in fact, it’s a club for players of Super Smash Bros. and other fighting games.

Let me digress for a moment and talk about the fighting game community as a whole. It’s a relatively small community compared to those of other genres — or even some individual games — but it’s a very friendly and open group of people devoted both to their favourite games and to one another.

Everything I’ve just said about the community applies to the club itself. The club meets almost every Saturday and organizes tournaments for various fighting games. Usually, about 8–12 people attend the weekly meetings. It’s not a particularly large group, but you know every one of them, which creates a very cozy and pleasant atmosphere. (But that doesn’t mean we don’t need new members — so please, come join us!)

In general, TRUSU clubs are exactly what you need if you’ve just moved here and don’t have anyone to talk to. If you have any questions or want to advertise your favourite club, I’d love to hear from you in the comments section. See you in my next post!
